It’s time to interview for that position you’ve been eyeing. You really want this job. You want to make sure you put the best foot forward.  It’s a good thing you are a member of Rising Coaches.  Continuing this five part series, we’ve got the cheat code all ready for you to succeed.

We polled a number of athletic directors, sport administrators, coaches and more to find out things they love that potential hires do before, during and after the interview.

After you read this, if you want to add to the list, feel free to jump on Rising Coaches social media and add a few things you LOVE as well.

LOVE

Love when you talk like you’re already part of the campus community -- it’s about more than just sport. Do your research so you know who you are meeting with.

Love when you talk about academics truthfully, not like “all my kids are 4.0 students”. Express you are committed to supporting the kids that may struggle.

Love when you have a relentless pursuit of self improvement - even after winning a championship.

Love when coaches have studied the craft for years and have a vision for how best to approach every aspect - from Xs and Os to academics, to travel, to strength and conditioning, recruiting, campus relations, fan base, etc.

Love when you aren’t overbearing. Be yourself. Don’t push too hard - be sincere.

Love when someone is authentic, relatable, will volunteer, develop others, focus on the whole person not just the player, trust the department and the staff.

Love when you have touches of old school coaching vibes like respect and discipline.

Love when you can articulate a vision broader than just basketball. “Tell me how basketball impacts X University outside of a Saturday night from 6 to 8 pm.”

Love when you bring a communal approach to leadership.  Be collaborative.  It’s not ‘my way or the highway’.

Love when you have the ability to connect with your players and understand the purpose of a team and team building.

Love when you understand and operate from a place of emotional intelligence.

Love a candidate who illustrates in a way that’s not obvious how you have prepared for this.

Love when you are problem solvers, especially with fundraising.

Love when you have tangible examples of how you paid their dues.

Love an email or handwritten note after the interview.

Love when you show up dressed professionally - like you respect the process.

If you have a few of your own -- feel free to jump on Rising Coaches social media and add a few things you LOVE as well.
